How We Study the Living World

From genes and organisms to ecosystems and global change, UCSB EEMB connects discovery-driven science with real-world stewardship.

What We Do

We study how living organisms interact with each other and their environments—shaping and being shaped by the world around them. Our work spans biological scales, from the physiology of individuals to the behavior of groups and the dynamics of ecosystems.

Why We Do It

Our research helps build the knowledge needed to address urgent environmental challenges. We explore how species adapt to climate change, uncover ways to manage invasive species, and identify patterns that drive biodiversity and its loss.

Where We Work

Located on California’s coast, we study life across land and sea—from Pacific ocean ecosystems to chaparral, oak woodland, desert, island, and freshwater habitats.
